NEW YORK — The following statement is from Anthony D. Romero, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union, after the grand jury handed down an indictment for Donald Trump on efforts to subvert the 2020 election.

“More than two years ago, shortly after the January 6 attack on the Capitol, the ACLU called for a special counsel to investigate President Trump for seeking to subvert the 2020 election. Today, a grand jury indicted the former president in D.C. for just that, after Special Counsel Jack Smith was appointed to conduct the investigation. All defendants are innocent until proven guilty, but no person is above the law. If the former president is found guilty, he must be held accountable.”
